Project Runway: Season 11

So... I'm a little behind the 8-ball on this season of Project Runway. Since I completely avoided the most recent "All Stars" season, I was not aware that the newest season had begun! Fortunately, the seamstresses at work are major fans and they keep me up to date on all of it.

Anyway, I will (obviously) not be blogging every episode, but I figured I'd put in my two cents about the changes this season, since there were quite a few.

First the bad:
- No Michael Kors! I miss his oompa-loompa-esque complexion and his amazing, snarky one-liners delivered in a perfect nasal deadpan. Zac Posen is fine in terms of his taste and judging skills, but no one will replace the incomparable MK when it comes to creative insults.

- Teams! I know that Tim Gunn and Heidi are all, "This is the REAL WORLD!" I just don't buy it. So far, we're three episodes in and the team method has some horrifically bad designs getting through because the rest of the team is stellar, and some other great designs that could be winners that are not being recognized because the rest of the team is so terrible. Also, watching the "Dream Team" crash and burn for three weeks in a row is just painful. Put them out of their misery already, producers!

And now the good:
- Redecorated workrooms! Parsons looks so fresh and new. I love the new workrooms, sewing rooms, and the stew room. All of it is fresh and fun. Last year, the stew room was especially stark, making Tim's entrance at the end to ask the losing contestant to "go upstairs and clean up your space" that much more difficult to watch.
- Fun challenges! I was particularly fond of the Spin uniform challenge- now that's what I consider "real world" stuff. Working with clients to create something stylish and functional is not always easy and the winning team really nailed it.

And just for fun, here are some of favorite designs (so far), by my favorite designers (so far).

Patricia is definitely a very talented lady. I love how quirky she is. So often there will be someone on the show with a unique background and an even more unique personality and all too often they are eliminated early on. It's as if they were selected more for the TV appeal than their design ability. Patricia seems to be the exception to that and at this point, I truly hope to see her make it to the finals.

Michelle is the best example of someone who is currently being overlooked because she is on the losing team. Every singe runway show, she has sent something down that is original, true to her design aesthetic and fashion forward. Had her team won the "Surprise" challenge, I have no doubt Heidi would have chosen her as one of the winners. And for the "Spin" challenge, I felt heartbroken for her. It was a complete waste of a fabulous design.

Daniel, much like Michelle has shown consistency each week with his design aesthetic and his workmanship. He's earned two wins in three episodes, and in episode 2, it was his design that won as well, but he quite gallantly gave the win to his design partner, Layana. He is obviously one of the most talented individuals we've ever seen on the show and I hope he continues to prove a strong contestant because I would love to see his runway show in the finale.

All in all, this season is off to a great start. I'm looking forward to seeing how the team aspect plays out in the long run.

Project Runway Season 9- Almost Here!

If you follow the news about Project Runway, you know that Season 9 airs next week. I was checking out the casting videos for some of the season 9 cast and I think there are definitely a lot of personalities there. I'm a bit worried the casting directors focused more on personality and whether they had a good "look" for TV rather than trying to get a diverse group of incredible designers. Based solely on their 1-2 minute "casting sessions" videos on Lifetime's website, I predict Danielle Everine and Amanda Perna as the first two to be eliminated (P.S. Rumor has it the first episode will have a quadruple elimination). I also predict the top three to include Joshua Christensen, Becky Ross and Bert Keeter in the first episode with Joshua as the winner of the first challenge.

I wonder how much the judges know about the contestants before they see their work. In a perfect world, they would know nothing and could base their scores solely on the work they see that day. But I imagine it's more complicated than that, especially for Heidi. I'm looking forward to Michael Kors saying things like, "She looks like a rodeo clown from the 13th century," and for Nina to roll her eyes at contestants who talk too much about their inspiration, but don't actually make anything inspiring. Also, should we start taking bets on the level of Michael Kors' tan? Last season, he was more orange every week. I can only imagine how much worse it's gotten. But enough about that- I can't wait for Tim Gunn to say things like, "There's no joy in this. Where's the exuberance?" I love when he says "exuberance." I also love when he frowns and holds his chin in his hand. He's awesome. (And he once said that I'm fabulous.)

Take a few minutes and watch some of the casting sessions yourself- then leave a comment and tell me who your favorite is so far. It's hard to tell with just a short video, but I like to see what my gut reaction is to each person before I see the slick, edited episodes.

Project Runway: Season 8, Episode 11

WIN: Andy
AUF'd: Christoper

I can't even begin to discuss this episode. I am thoroughly confused by it. Heidi's "athletic" line is anything but. The designers were given a budget and time to shop at Mood, but then criticized for using fabrics outside of Heidi's line. Andy won? With those Nightmare Before Christmas outfits? Ok, that was a bit harsh- I do think the dress was cute and the hoodie was also pretty nice, but what on earth was that middle outfit?

Andy's collection was actually my least favorite of the lot:

I think these pictures make the collection look a LOT better than it did in motion as it went down the runway. Other than that, I think I've said all I can say about this collection.

And now for Christopher's collection which got him auf'd:

Honestly, the difference between the winning collection and the losing collection isn't hugely apparent to me. Sure, I hate Christopher's butterfly hoodie, but other than that, it's a perfectly fine set of casual clothing. Also, Heidi raved about the top in the first look in the workroom, so what happened to her love affair? It was apparently quite short-lived.

If it had been up to me, Mondo would have had his fourth win in a row. His collection was the most appealing to me. I hated his second look because it reminded me too much of the 80's, but the other two looks worked well for me:

I would personally love to wear the last look- I am in love with that hoodie. I even like his quirky little headbands. They're fun!

Style Icons- Reality Competition Show Hosts

I admit it, I'm a reality competition show junkie. You already know about my obsession with Project Runway, but I also love The Amazing Race, Top Chef and Top Chef Masters and never miss an episode of any of them. I also occassionally indulge in America's Next Top Model, the Bachelor/ette, and I'm looking forward to the new Bravo show "Work of Art" (premiering tonight, actually). I prefer the shows that require a refined skill, which is why Project Runway and Top Chef rate so highly for me. But every reality show has a host and everyone knows that the host's job is to speak well and look good.

ANTM has Tyra:

I'm not even gonna go there.

The Amazing Race has Phil Keoghan:

Dressing Phil is probably the hardest host-styling job out there. His travel schedule is absolutely insane- the contestants are usually in a different country for each leg of the race and sometimes even a different continent. Weather and climate are always a factor, I'm sure. But no matter where they are- Detroit or Dubai, Phil always looks pulled together and appropriate. I love his casual, laid-back style. It must be fun to travel the world, but he spends so little time in each place, it also has to be hectic. I don't know if I would be up for the task of hosting a show with that much traveling in such a short amount of time.

I would be happy, however, to host a show like Project Runway with Tim and Heidi:

Let's be honest- Heidi basically always looks stunning- and she's been pregnant on the show more than once. As for Tim, he knows what works for him, so he is consistent with his perfectly tailored suits. Obviously I would enjoy being the host of a show like PR because the task hits so close to home for me. But if I had to choose between hosting Project Runway and hosting Top Chef or Top Chef Masters, I would go with Top Chef/Top Chef Masters hands down without a second thought. There two primary reasons for this:

1.) Chef-testants are not known for being very fashionable. In fact, they are often quite a motley crew, so the host always looks stunning by comparison.

2.) There is an abundance of exceptional, gourmet food around at all times for the host (and judges) to eat.

Padma Lakshmi and Kelly Choi are the lucky hosts of Top Chef and Top Chef Masters, respectively. I love both of their style choices nearly all the time. Occassionally Padma will wear something a little out-there, but I always appreciate that she's a fashion risk-taker. (And did you know she's one of the former Mrs. Salman Rushdies? How's that for a notable spouse?) Both Padma and Kelly like to sport solid jewel tones and they always look amazing in them:

I find that I have difficulty watching TV and movies without thinking about what people are wearing. It's an occupational hazard, I suppose. Project Runway: Season Seven, Episode 12

BRYANT PARK: Emilio, Seth Aaron, Mila and Jay

What a fun challenge, right? Designing fashion inspired by the circus must be SO much fun, especially the part where you get to actually watch a circus show. A traditional circus show. I know Cirque du Soleil has been all the rage for the last 10 years or so, but there's a reason Barnum & Bailey's is still going strong. It's the "Greatest Show on Earth!" As for the fashions, I loved how every design looked so avant garde and over the top. Drama! I love it!

My initial reactions to each look:
Jay: He actually managed to make that Michael Jackson jacket look like it wasn't a Michael Jackson jacket. The open neckline made all the difference. I wish he had done it in less circus-y colors because it did strike me as almost too similar to an actual circus ring leader costume.

Mila: I HATE this outfit! It was costume from start to finish, in my opinion. Awful, just awful.

Anthony: Nice gown, but not anywhere close to the drama needed for a final challenge garment.

Emilio: Why did he have to add those polka dots? I think it would have been FLAWLESS if it wasn't for the polka dots. But that's just my opinion. I don't think the polka dots ruined the look, I just would have preferred it without them. To me, the stripes were so striking that I didn't need the polka dots.

Seth Aaron: If the sleeves had been shorter or maybe if the garment had been sleeveless, I would have liked it better. I still love the outfit because of how dramatic it was and because of the gravity-defying collars.

As for the judges reactions, I LOVE how Michael and Heidi FULL ON went up to the runway to feel Anthony's gown fabric. I also LOVE that everyone loved Emilio's gown the best. It was my favorite, too.

This is always the episode where they ask the designers, "Why should you go to fashion week?" and "Who should go with you?" I wish they'd call me up and ask, "Renee, whose collections would YOU like to see?" But it doesn't work that way goshdarnit. But let's suppose they did ask me that, my answer would be, "Emilio, Seth Aaron and Anthony." I am NOT a Mila fan and I think Jay's designs are something I've already seen. I rarely feel like Jay is being incredibly innovative. Meanwhile, I think that Seth Aaron and Emilio are always incredibly creative and Anthony's just SO entertaining. That's why I'd pick those three.

I love the twist with Jay and Mila at the end- it's just like the season with Chris March and Rami. I hope Jay brings it because I really don't like Mila. I don't like her designs and I don't like her personality. I don't have any interest in seeing a Mila collection to be honest. But time will tell how it all plays out.

Project Runway: Season Seven, Episode 11

AUF'd: Jonathan

Could this episode have had a little more drama, please? Maya leaves! Seth Aaron's model leaves! Anthony comes back! The other model comes back to be Seth Aaron's model! Heidi flashes Jay! Anthony stays up til 2:30! Jonathan makes three different dresses, each one worse than the one before it! Jessica Alba guests judges! Two winners!!! Aaaahhhhh!!! It's so crazy! And holy cow, Heidi Klum is one tough client. I do NOT envy these designers.

I'm so happy for Anthony and Emilio- how convenient that Jessica Alba loved Anthony's dress, right? Heidi, Michael & Nina must have loved it, too, or they would't have named Anthony as an additional winner. I think it was positively serendipitous how it all worked out. Emilio made the perfect dress for Heidi, while Anthony made the perfect dress for Jessica without even knowing she'd be there to judge! And I also agree wholeheartedly with the judges decision to auf Jonathan. It was his time. He hasn't really been a top contender, but more of a middle-of-the-road contestant. When it gets this close to the finale of the show, the mediocre designers just have to go. Of course I feel bad for him being auf'd because he's a nice person, but in the end I think it was a good call.

On a side note, I am not a regular viewer of the "Models of the Runway" show. However, last week I did watch it. It was a very tense episode because Seth Aaron's model Valeria was considering taking a different modeling gig and leaving the show. In the end, she made a HUGE deal out of saying how despite the great opportunity, she was going to choose to stay with Seth Aaron. She was very dramatic about it and really played up the whole "loyalty" angle. And the gorgeous Cerri (whose accent I adore, btw) got booted because Valeria chose to stay. Anyway, my point is that I don't understand why she made such a huge show out of staying on the show, only to quit a day later! Is that something the producers told her to do simply because they thought it would make for a more dramatic couple of episodes? Or did she think of that all on her own? Or did she truly have a change of heart? I suppose we'll never know.

My friend Shannon is adorable and incredibly stylish. She also happens to be pregnant. She's the kind of girl who really puts together a fun and funky outfit. Well, here facebook status recently lamented the fact that there aren't enough hip maternity styles out there in the stores. She's a try-before-you-buy kind of girl- not so into the internet shopping. Anyway, this is my attempt to help her out a little (although as I mentioned she is pretty stylin', so she doesn't need much help from me). I believe she is due in June or July so these pieces are geared more towards the warmer weather.

In my experience perusing the materinty options, I've found that most pieces are very basic- the colors are basic, the styles are basic. Basic, basic, basic. Which to me really translates to: boring, boring, boring. That's why I've picked mostly bright colors for the pieces above. I completely understand Shannon's frustration and I'm sure she's not the first pregnant woman to come to the realization that while she may want to dress in a hip and stylish fashion throughout her pregnancy, the options just aren't out there. But fear not, lovely pregnant women, I have a solution for you!

First, pick up these maternity basics- pieces that will fit your ever-expanding belly and use them as your base. Then, layer on other non-maternity items you may already own along with funky accessories and you'll feel more stylin' than you ever thought possible. Shannon is the kind of girl who loves bright colors and bling, so I'm gearing these selections towards her. However, the basic principle remains the same whether you like bright and bling-y or something more subdued. The following pieces are non-maternity, but would work perfectly at nearly any stage on pregnancy:

The final touch for any outfit- maternity or otherwise is the accessories. For this section I wil ignore Shannon's buy-it-in-person rule simple because fit isn't as much of an issue when purchasing accessories. We all like to be able to physically handle the pieces we are buying, but sometimes you find something so fabulous online that you let go of that rule! Accessories are our way to make outfits unique and to bring our own personality to them. This should be no different when dressing in maternity clothes, so break out the accessories that make you feel the most stylin' you there is.

A note on "maternity" jewelry: Keep necklaces to bust-length or shorter. This will help draw the eye upward to your face. Long necklaces will basically act like a big light-up arrow pointing to your pregnant belly. I'm not saying you don't want to draw attention to your belly, but the thing about it is that it sort of draws attention to itself just by nature. So wear necklines and jewelry that bring the focus up to your glowing countenance whenever possible.

Project Runway: Season Seven, Episode 5

WIN: Anthony
AUF'd: Anna


First of all, I want to say that Anthony's winning reaction was priceless. He is a hoot! And unlike many contestants, his quirkiness is true. It doesn't seem like some contrived personality made to stand out on TV. I believe he truly was that surprised and happy. As he should be! A COVER picture on Marie Claire magazine? Amazing. And as Tim Gunn pointed out, it has never been done in Project Runway history. And for Heidi Klum to be the model, well, that's just icing on the cake!

I feel that when the challenge involves a celebrity actually wearing the garment somewhere, it basically has to come down to what they prefer, so a designer who plays to their personal style will always come out on top. (With Tiki Barber really suffering the most with that horrible menswear challenge a few seasons ago. That was painful to watch.) Anyway, Anthony's dress was truly stunning. If you know me at all, you know that the shade of blue he chose is my asbolute favorite, so I was leaning towards his dress anyway. Add to that the gorgeous scultpura detail that went from the shoulder down the front of the dress, it was really masterfully done. Nice job, Anthony! I'm so happy for you!

As for Anna, after being in the bottom last week, I think we all sort of saw that one coming. Janeane has been sort of under the radar, but I'm sure you all notice that remark she made about it coming down to her and Anna in the bottom. Anna's outft was WAY too teenie-bopper-cute. And let's be honest, a top like that is barely flattering on someone stick-thin, but Heidi will be in a post-pregnancy body, meaning big ol' boobies which would only make that top worse. The vest was so boring and forgettable and the shorts were cute, but the fabric was so blah-office-worker-esque. Basically, the entire outfit was just boring. Unfortnately, she seemed to focus entirely on perfect construction and not so much on great design.


Finally, I agreed with the judges in all three of the top choices- Emelio and Ben also made stunning, spring-magazine-worthy dresses. I especially loved Ben's dress because he made bold color choices, but the end result was not busy or distracting. I could absolutely see it on a magazine cover. And Emilio's gorgeous cherry-red concoction was so flattering and it was one of the few dresses with really nice movement. I guess movement isn't something to consider for a 3/4 photo, but when I saw it move on the runway, I instantly felt like it was a harbinger of spring. Nicely done, guys!


I also agreed with the judges bottom choices for once- Mila's weird color-blocking is definitely getting old and to be perfectly honest, her construction looked poor. The points of the chevrons were puckered all over and even the straight sides of some of them looked like they were rippling a bit. Also, is Mila going to turn into a one-trick pony? Is that all she can come up with? Color blocking? I'm not a fan. Also, her remark about the other designers not cheering for her 2nd place status last week was odd. Umm, Mila? Maybe they're not psyched because they think your designs are ugly?


And poor Janeane. What was up with that fabric choice? The color, the weight, the stiffness- everything was terrible! And then to pair it with a weird organza shrug- I didn't get it. If her inspiration was ocean waves, she picked fabric that did not lend itself to that inspiration at all. She's on thin ice for me. 

Project Runway is BACK!!!

I promise to post a full write-up of each episode as I did last season, but tonight I simply HAVE to go to bed ASAP. This post may be a tad brief but I'll make up for it in the future. For now, here are some basic observations of the season opener:


- Heidi looks as radiant as she ever did. Love her.
- Michael Kors is looking more orange every season. Someone please tell him to lay off the fake 'n bake. He's a pumpkin.
- Nicole Richie looks as terrible as she ever did. I kind of want to shake her and shout, "Eat a burger!" and "Lay off the eye make-up!"
- The talent is definitely there this season- the runway show was impressive. The designers were ambitious and I love that.
- Parsons looks like it got a fresh paint job- everything is bright and pretty.
- The grand prize is SO much bigger- that HP/Intel package sounds awesome!
- Why wasn't Jay on the chopping block for putting a pom-pom on the model's belly? Can we say "UNFLATTERING?"
- Janeane is the female version of Ricky- she is already crying way too much.
- Anthony is hilarious- they'll keep him on the show for entertainment value alone!
- "Ping?" Really? Is that her real name?


I completely agree with the judges' decision and I'm hoping that since the show is back in New York, we'll have more consistent judging. Last season had too many judges. Nina, Heidi and Michael are great judges and along with Tim, they keep the level of the show very high. Their standards require designers to work at a top skill level and creativity level. And of course Tim Gunn is just amazing. The formula works, so please, producers, keep the show in New York and don't change a thing!

Project Runway-Penultimate episode

I have a somewhat love/hate relationship with the second to last episode. While I find it interesting, it makes me feel impatient to see the final collections on the runway in their completion. That being said, I'm going to reserve judgement until I see next weeks final episode.

In fact, the only thing I really want to comment on this week was the surreal moment with Tim and Heidi shaking some booty behind the screen. Weirdo, right?

Project Runway- Episode 11

Such a cool challenge this week, don't you think? I think it was a perfect sort of mini-prep for their future task of creating a collection for Bryant Park. I also think the judges have gotten a little more on track with their decisions.

WIN: Althea
AUF'd: Logan

I think that Althea's look was a little out-there, but I get it. At the time that this episode was filmed, harem pants were just starting to make a come-back. Now, that trend is starting to pass (fingers crossed), so the volumous "paper bag" waist pants that Althea made were in line with that trend and fashion forward at the time. So all I'm saying is, I get it. If I were to choose a winner, though, it would have been Irina. Her look was the perfect complement to the original winning look in every way- from soup to nuts, it was perfect. I felt like we were seeing two looks from a very cohesive collection- one where we get to see the type of woman Irina designs for and through her clothing, we see her story, too. It's really unfortunate that Irina is such a pill, because if that talent were backed up by a little more positivity, she'd be unstoppable.

As for the auf, I completely agree that Logan needed to go. He's been consistently in the bottom. His weirdo zipper dress was exactly as Nina Garcia described- a student's project. Also, what's with Logan's silver sneakers?

I have to talk about Christopher for a moment, too. I'm SO over his "play on volume." His dress tonight was decent- as one of the judges put it, "I liked 2/3 of the dress." I want to see Christopher DO SOMETHING ELSE!!! Volume, volume, volume. Over and over and over again! And it's not as if he's playing with volume in different places- it's always a skirt with volume. We're seeing the same silhouette from him week after week. I'm not denying that his pieces are full of interesting detail, but at some point, he's going to need to show more versatility.

Project Runway- Episode 10

I have to say that these late nights waiting for PR to air after a long day at work- it's not easy! I'm practically falling asleep as I type!

It is really getting down to the nitty gritty- seven designers left is not a lot when you consider the fact that three of them will be going to New York Fashion Week. And after tonight we're down to six designers. Crazy!  Ok, on to the episode:

WIN: Irina
AUF'd: Nicolas

I agree with the judges decision this week for win & auf. My favorites were Irina and Gordana. The open back on Irina's was very surprising, but in a good way. Irina was smart to choose Aspen as her inspiration location. And Gordana's dress was spectacular. It looked like a dress you would see on the red carpet. What I didn't understand about this episode is why the judges like Carol Hannah's dress- it looked like everything Uli ever sent down the runway. Nothing innovative about it at all, really. And let's be honest, Uli did the flowy print dress far better than Carol Hannah.

As for the bottom, I agree that Nicolas & Logan deserved to be there. Christopher needs to really get his act together, though. His dress wasn't terrible- I can't believe Heidi called it "unwearable." That's a bit harsh. Maybe I have bad taste, but I would love to wear that dress!

I pretty much agree with the judges this time. My biggest complaint with the majority of the designers is that so few chose to use a print. The challenge required blue, not boring! And that's why I agree that Irina should win because she created an interesting print. I got a little sick of looking at flat solid fabrics after a while!

As for Louise, it was time for her to go. She never really stood out to begin with and now the last 2 weeks, she's been a total disaster. What was with that light blue fabric choice? And the craftsmanship was horrific! Did you get a look at that hem? O.M.G. Scary.

I felt terrible for Christopher. I agree that his designs were a bit of a mish-mash, but when Heidi described the ruffle at the neck as a folded up lobster bib, I just about died! I hated watching him break down like that. It reminded me of Andre's crying breakdown from a few seasons ago. Hold it together, Christopher! You can do it!

Overall, I'm much happier than I was last week after all that judging craziness. Hurray for Michael Kors!

NYC Fashion Week starts today!

Today is my last day in New York before heading out on a camping trip for a long weekend. Talk about culture shock- the hustle & bustle of the big city, staying in a gorgeous hotel, eating at fancy restaurants to sleeping in a tent, and hanging out in the woods. Actually, we're camping in Lewes, Delaware right on the beach, and hopefully doing some ocean kayaking. I can't wait. You will not be hearing from me for those four days because there will be no "inter-webs" at the campsite. Plus, I don't think you want to hear about my camping & kayaking fashion choices. Let's just say, there are none. Utilitarian is the way to go with those trips. Speaking of, my shoes are STILL holding up really well in the city. I apply the rub relief each morning and it does the trick. My body is sore from all the walking and lugging bags full of fabric and clothing. I've already filled 1 giant suitcase and half of another and we're here until about 5:00 tonight, so I might do some more damage on the ol' credit card.

The most exciting thing about being in the city today is that it is the start of New York Fashion Week. I'm dying to get over to the tents in the hopes of spotting Michael Kors or Heidi Klum or... Tim Gun!!! Or any number of celebrities or designers. I wish I had the nerve to try to sneak into a show, but I'm afraid I don't. Maybe someday. Or maybe someday I'll actually figure out a way to finagle an invitation. If any of you out there reading this have been able to either sneak in, or get an invite, please feel free to email me with your secrets as to how you did it.

Project Runway- Episode 3

Mitchell is OUT. Hallelujah! You have to wonder if he cared at all towards the end. He admitted to choosing Ra'mon because he needed someone to carry him through the challenge. Interesting, isn't it, that while all the other designers were disappointed that they had to work in teams, Mitchell was happy because he thought he could pick someone good to carry his weight in addition. At least he's cute, right? And I think it makes Ra'mon feel all the more justified in his win, don't you?

This week's breakdown:

Auf: Mitchell

I love love love the fact that they were both on the same team, with one winner and one auf. And I love even more that Heidi pointed that out to Mitchell right before her, "Three strikes, you're out."

I wholeheartedly agree with the judges decision both for Mitchell and Ra'mon. Mitchell made the part of the to outfits that was completely covered up while Ra'mon did everything else. Literally! And let's talk about the avant garde dress- if it wasn't made out of neoprene, it could have been almost too much like so many dresses out there right now. Fortunately, it WAS made out of neoprene and that really took it to a whole different level- the level that lives on Mars!

The challenge itself seemed a little bit out-there, but I think that the designers really rose to the challenge. I found myself not really paying attention to the hair design, the importance of which Tim Gunn emphasized so strongly. I guess that means the hair was probably perfect. I think that when the hair and make-up draws your eye, it's out of balance with the rest of the outfit, but when you barely notice it, it most likely is complementing the design perfectly. It's true in life as well. It's all about wearing the design, not the design wearing you, right? I'm like a broken record with that advice lately, but it's so true!

I think it's unfortunate that Epperson and Qrystal had such problems because her esthetic combined with his sewing skill and taste level could have been a match made in heaven. In a previous PR post, I think I referred to Epperson as the most loveable designer. Maybe I jumped to that judgement a little too quickly!

I was a tad surprised that Nicholas and Gordana were in the bottom because the macrame top was absolutely spectacular! And the criticism on the pants was that they were a little sloppy. Ummm, judges? They were designing for surfers, right? So what's wrong with a little baggy, sloppy pant? And let's be honest, the pants were just a little too long and that was what made them look sloppy. Picky picky picky judges! I think that's a good sign, though. When the judges have to really nit-pick it means the designers are all working at a very high level. But then again, let's be honest about Nicholas & Gordana's avant garde look. It was about as hideous as the macrame was spectacular. Also, have you noticed that the quality of sewing being done this season is probably the highest yet? To make an avant garde look in addition to the beach wear was really impressive and even Ra'mon who was practically working alone was able to finish something really good.

Another favorite of the night was Logan and Christopher's avant garde dress. I loved the drama of that huge tulle skirt. I do hope, however, that Christopher doesn't turn out to be a one-trick-pony with that "play on volume" esthetic of his.

Overall, another enjoyable episode of Project Runway has come and gone. I still miss Michael Kors, but at least we had the pleasure of seeing Tim Gunn in flip flops this week! I just don't think I'll ever tire of this show- it's really too fabulous.

It's back!!!

Project Runway is BACK and better than ever! I am SO happy! Tim, Heidi, Nina and Michael have all been sorely missed and they did not disappoint with this first episode of Season 6!

First, let's discuss the All-Star challenge. I was pleasantly surprised by several of the designers, particularly Uli. I love how she stepped out of her comfort zone and used solids with lots of structure. The result was beautiful dresses with feminine silhouettes and amazing craftsmanship. Another surprise was Daniel Vosovic, but for me it was a less positive one. I don't think there was a single piece of his that I would wear. I just don't have the body for his pieces, plus they really were not my style. I understand the judges' decision and of course I'm happy for him. He was my favorite designer in his season, but his final collection was ultimately a bit disappointing. I think the years between then and now have been good for him- he has truly found his esthetic. Santino was as hilarious as he's always been, so that was no surprise. Jeffrey made some beautiful pieces that I could have pictured him making in his season of P.R. Korto did a really nice job, especially on her red carpet dress. That was a dress I would DIE to wear! Sweet P's leather dress was stunning and a real surprise. I always liked her dresses on her season, but I never felt like they really stood out. That dress stood out! I was not a huge fan of Mychael's designs, but Chris March was a HUGE surprise! His red carpet gown took my breath away. It is true that he needed a VERY tall model to pull it off, but even so, you could clearly see where he was going with it and it was SPECTACULAR. In the end, I was happy for Daniel, of course. I think this show was a brilliant way for Lifetime to kick off the new season.

Next, I must admit, I was nervous that the show would change after moving to a different network, but I have to say that it felt NO different. The producers are obviously not trying to fix something that isn't broken, right? I think that it is bound to succeed even though it is no longer on Bravo because the style of the show remains the same and all the key elements are in place- Tim, Heidi, Nina, Michael, and of course very talented contestants. Also, the designers all seem SO nice. One of my issues with Season 5 was that there were a lot of designers who seemed to be trying to make a name for themselves through TV rather than through their work. Blayne was a perfect example of that. I was sick of his "licious" catch-phrases by the end of the first episode. Too bad his catch phrases never CAUGHT ON! Too bad for him, that is. Not too bad for the rest of the world!

Ok, let's talk about the episode!

WIN: Christopher Straub
AUF: Ari Fish

In a previous post, I said that I thought Christopher would be a top contender and he won the first episode tonight! Go Chris! I hope he continues to do well. I respect that he works with inexpensive materials and that he is self-taught. In tonight's episode, he mentioned his lack of a sewing vocabulary (smocking and godets were the terms he didn't know), but I think that you can be self-taught and still be very successful. In order to go really far, he'll eventually need to educate himself a bit, but his raw talent is definitely apparent. A lot of the designs tonight were very impressive and if tonight's episode was any indication of what we're in for, this might be the best season of Project Runway yet!

As for Ari, I understand where she was going with her design, but ultimately, I think the judges made the right decision. Conceptual design can be really tough and I absolutely think it has its place, I just don't know if its place is on a competition reality show. I think that given the freedom to just do her thing, Ari would probably make some really interesting fashion, but given the challenge, it just didn't work.

Now, for the drama: Am I a horrible person for thinking that Johnny was milking that former addict thing? I mean, breaking down, crying, talking about quitting- all on the FIRST challenge! I really feel for him as a recovering addict and I of course want him to be successful, but I thought that it was all a little dramatic for the opening episode. I guess that's what makes for great TV, right? And in the end, his dress was stunning, so maybe a little breakdown was good for him! And what about Mitchell and his naked model?!?! Ridiculous! I think he was an idiot to do something SO detailed on a model he had never seen. It seems as though her measurements were WAY off from what he was given, but he should have planned better. I just hope he learns from his mistake!

The personalities seem good without being too over-the-top. I like that. I like it when the show is mostly about the work. Big personalities obviously make for good TV, but to me they get so tiresome so quickly. As far as personalities go for this season, I think the most loveable is Epperson. He is absolutely charming and I love that he's a little older, but still in it to win it. I didn't love his dress, but that doesn't mean he won't win me over down the road, right?

Other runway favorites this week were Gordana, Louise and Shirin. Let's talk about Shirin for a moment- that capelet that fell back and draped along the back of the skirt was absolutely stunning. I would absolutely LOVE to wear that dress!

How long is too long?

I was at the Mt. Gretna Outdoor Art Show in Mt. Gretna, PA this weekend- it was a hot, sunny day, perfect for walking through a wooded area filled with booths of all kinds of artwork. I went to this show for the first time last summer and I remember being pleasantly surprised by a lot of the pieces I saw. So many times at various art shows, I feel as though I'm seeing the same paintings, the same photographs, the same ceramics over and over and over again. At the Mt. Gretna show, I felt like I was seeing innovative designs, mediums and subjects. You can imagine my excitement when I realized I was able to attend the show again this year. Once again, there was a decent variety of artwork to see, so it was definitely an enjoyable afternoon. There was one artist from whom I bought a print last year. It was artwork that really made me smile, and even laugh. I had a strong reaction to it and absolutely HAD to have one of his prints. There was a whimsical quality to his pieces that really spoke to me and I thoroughly enjoyed looking at each painting. He had a booth at the show again this year, so of course I looked through all his pieces again. I was disappointed to see not a single new piece. I understand that his particular style of painting is very time consuming, but at the same time I felt that after an entire year, he should have had at least one or two new pieces. It got me thinking about fashion designers as artists- they are expected to produces dozens of pieces each season- at the very least twice a year. If they don't, as Heidi Klum would say, they're "out." There certainly must be a tremendous amount of pressure and I'm sure that as a designer, you have to find the happy medium that works for you- producing enough new work to remain buzz-worthy while at the same time maintaining the integrity of your work. So am I being too hard on this painter from the art show? I was really looking forward to seeing some new works from him and it was ultimately disappointing to see that he had nothing new. I suppose that just because there was nothing new at the art show, that doesn't mean he didn't produce any new works this year, so maybe I am being too critical. After all, as an artist, you try to keep your fans happy, but they are not the reason for your work, but how long is too long to produce something new?
