Rate My Look: Thank You, Royal Wedding

A few months ago, I purchased a super cute little fascinator and wore it to work. It was an adorable look, but I understood that it might not be for everyone. In fact, while most of my co-workers loved it, I knew some of our customers thought I was a complete loon. How do I know? There are mirrors everywhere in our store, so even when my back was turned, I was often able to see people pointing and giggling. It never bothered me, mostly because I rarely concern myself with what others think of my outfit choices. Of course I like to see the reactions people may have, but regardless of whether it is a positive or negative reaction, what I care about is whether or not I like it. And if I like it, I'll wear it.

But I digress...

My point was really to tell you that ever since the Royal Wedding, whenever I wear this headband, I get a completely different reaction from strangers.

Instead of snickers and giggling when I'm not looking, strangers now approach me and say such things as:

"I love your fascinator!"

And...

"You look very royal today!"

And...

"Your fascinator is so great!"

At first I was annoyed by this- I thought to myself that I've been wearing this and other fascinators for months and many people mocked me for it. Now that people have seen hats and fascinators at the Royal Wedding, suddenly they've decided they are acceptable. I hated that it was not socially acceptable to wear something so outlandish until then. Up until the Royal Wedding, the best thing that would have been said about my fascinator would have been a back-handed remark about looking like a wanna-be Carrie Bradshaw. As much as this might have initially frustrated me, in the long run, it's actually a good thing.

Thanks to all the fabulous (and not so fabulous) hats worn to the Royal Wedding, so many people have been exposed to a fashion accessory they might never have known about. Seeing all those fashion headpieces on all the wedding day guests has helped educate an enormous number of people. So who cares if I had to endure a few snickers and strange looks before- now, thanks to the Royal Wedding, I might not be the only one proudly wearing an ostentatious headpiece! I might even see this trend take off!

As if my fascinator wasn't enough, I also pulled out my "spats" booties to put together this outfit for church today. I love these booties, and they look just darling with my pencil skirt, chiffon blouse and fascinator.

What do you think? Do you see the fascinator trend taking off even more now because of the Royal Wedding? Leave a comment and tell me what you think!
